A little while back I had floated the notion that The Cabinet would benefit from naming an honorary first member and "patron saint" of sorts.
I had suggested Sir John A Macdonald for what seemed to me to be a number of sound reasons. This suggestion was, however, met with some... resistance. While I am not necessarily withdrawing my nomination of "Old Tomorrow" (yes, that was his actual nickname, or rather one of many of his actual nicknames), in the service of consensus building I thought it prudent to throw the floor open to other nominations.
The minimum requirements for a honorary first membership in "The Cabinet" are as follows:
(1) He should preferably be Canadian, or have done something interesting in Canada, or Scottish (or have done something interesting in Scotland....).
(2) He should have a known fondness for Scotch whisky, or it should at least be a reasonable assumption that he would have had a fondness for Scotch whisky.
(3) He should be colourful, but not especially heroic.
(4) He should be dead.
I will get the process underway by adding Sir John Franklin (pictured above) and Lord Selkirk to the list of nominees.
