Bourbon Night
It is perhaps ironic that the first post to The Cabinet blog will be regarding a meeting devoted to sampling bourbon whiskies, rather than scotch, but so be it.
The Cabinet held its fourth official meeting last night at which three bourbons were tasted. More by happy accident than by clever design we moved from the simplest, calmest and smoothest through to the one with the most complexity, fire and bite. At the smooth end of the scale was the Woodford Reserve, followed by the Eagle Rare and then finally the remarkably raw Baker's 7. The two ends of the spectrum were sufficiently extreme so as to make the in-between Eagle Rare the easy favorite. In addition, the Eagle Rare possessed some, albeit quite subtle, scotch-like characteristics (salt? leather?) that will make it interesting to bring out on a future scotch night.
With the bourbons we snacked on smoked ham, speck, cured salmon tidbits, Guinness cheddar, ginger Stilton, balsamic onions and watermelon while listening to probably altogether too much banjo.
The next meeting is tentatively set to center around smoky scotches and is aimed for mid-October.
Slainte!
